Many people want whiter teeth, but they are not sure how to get it.
There are many products available on the market, such as whitening strips, whitening toothpastes, DIY whitening trays – but these things are not proven to give long lasting results or even work.
The best thing to do if your thinking about tooth whitening is visiting a dentist, after all they are qualified to advise you about teeth.
They will have a look at your teeth and gums and make sure you are suitable for whitening for cherry cam models. They will then take a picture and make a note of the current colour of your teeth ( the shade). From here there are 2 types of whitening treatments.
One is a take home whitening system, this involved having some impressions of your teeth taken or a dental scan (depending on the level of technology in your chosen dental practice). Once this has been done the trays are bespoken made to fit your mouth. You then whiten at home using a special whitening solution worn with the trays. You can either wear for 1-2 hours or overnight depending on the chosen solution.
The other option is laser whitening. This is done in a dental surgery using specialized equipment. The first stage is to prepare your mouth for treatment in which we cover the lips and gums and just leave the teeth exposed. The whitening gel is then applied to the teeth. Once applied, heat is introduced in the form of a U-V lamp which helps the gel to penetrate into the surface of the teeth lifting any stains. The gel is normally applied and reapplied 3 or 4 times during a 1 hour session so that the dentist can monitor the colour changes closely.
It is important to remember that tooth whitening is not a one time, permeant procedure. You will need to have ‘top ups’ of this treatment and how often depends on how white you want to go and your lifestyle. Things that are known to discolour teeth are: smoking, eating foods with colourant in, drinking tea coffee and red wine.
If you experience any sensitivity during your whitening procedure your must visit your dentist.
